Overview

PhysicsWallah (PW) is one of India's largest edtech platforms, founded in 2016 by Alakh Pandey. What started as a YouTube channel for physics has grown into a publicly listed company with 10M+ paid students, 80+ YouTube channels, and courses across JEE, NEET, and school-level exams. Their academic counseling team plays a key role in guiding students to the right programs — and hiring for it at scale is a constant need.

The Challenge

  • Campus Screening at Scale: 300–400 eligible students at Chandigarh University, no fast way to filter them

  • Bad Alternatives: Aptitude tests can't evaluate communication or sales instinct — the things that matter for counseling roles

  • Travel Cost: Flying a panel of interviewers to campus for 3–4 days, pulling them off active business

  • Scheduling Nightmare: Coordinating 400 interview slots across a small panel — days of logistics before a single interview happens

ShivamShivamCategory Manager at Physicswallah
"Either we fly the team out for a week and lose them from business, or we run an aptitude test that tells us nothing about whether someone can actually talk to a student and close."

"We got a ranked list with real evaluations. I didn't have to guess who to interview first — the report told me where each candidate was strong and where they fell short."

"I was dreading coordinating 400 interview slots. Instead, I sent one invite, and 361 students took it on their own. The next morning I had a ranked report ready for the panel."

How it works

How did you set things up?

Shivam shared the questions he typically asks in R1s for academic counselors — communication scenarios, objection handling, student engagement situations. Koyo built a custom AI interview around those. Invite links were sent to all eligible students at Chandigarh University.

When did you realize this actually works?

When Shivam took the interview himself. The AI asked follow-up questions he didn't expect, pushed back on vague answers, and the evaluation report scored communication quality alongside domain knowledge. That's when he decided to run the full campus drive with it.

What surprised you?

That 361 students completed the interview in a single day with zero coordination. No slots, no scheduling, no panel availability issues. Students who were traveling just took it from wherever they were.

Advice for someone evaluating an AI interviewer?

Try it yourself first. Take the interview. If the follow-ups feel real and the report tells you something you couldn't get from a resume, it works. That's what Shivam did, and that's what convinced the team.
